Summer is almost over but fall lawn care is beginning. Keep your yard protected and help it survive the winter so your yard will be vibrant and plush in the spring. The weather is cooler and the weekends are the best time to tackle these tasks to get a jumpstart on maintaining your yard. Here are a few to start with….

FERTILIZATION & WEED CONTROL: The best time to fertilize your lawn not only spring and early summer but fall as well. Fall fertilization and tackling tough weeds helps your lawn build a strong root system which helps your lawn survive the winter better and be stronger for a healthy and a vibrant green in the spring. AERATION & OVERSEEDING: Since the ground isn’t frozen yet and after a hot dry summer, aeration allows your lawn to breathe allowing more fertilizer, oxygen, and water to penetrate to the root system of your lawn. RAKING LEAVES & FINAL MOW: Getting the leaves off the ground before the first snowfall is important. It will deter rodents and insects from inhabiting during the winter. Mulch the leaves and provide some organic matter to the soil. Mow your lawn before winter and cut it slightly shorter (2 inches) than average 2.5-3 inches.

Finally if you mow your own lawn, remember to maintenance your mower. Don’t wait until the spring when everyone else is looking for repair work on their mowers. Get a jumpstart on mower maintenance (sharpen blades, new oil, etc) after the final mow so that it’s ready to go come spring. Remember that battery-operated mowers should be put on a battery tender during winter to protect the battery during the cold months. A battery tender (or trickle charger) brings the battery up to a full charge to supply just enough current to keep it there indefinitely.
